William Baier

November 15, 1925 — January 18, 2012

William W. "Bill" Baier, age 86, of Wautoma, died peacefully early Wednesday morning, January 18, 2012 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born November 15, 1925 at Chilton, WI the son of William and Ida (Gotter) Baier.
He married Barbara Novitske in 1958. They had two adopted children, Jane Bubolz,Gillett, WI and Bruce Baier, whom preceded Bill in death on June 13, 1987. His wife, Barbara passed away on June 12, 1982. Bill married Patricia (Frase) Keske on October 25, 1986 in Wautoma.
He attended public schools at Chilton and joined the US Navy in January of 1944. He served his country during World War II in the Pacific Theatre on the Navy Hospital Ship, USS Solace. Bill participated in the invasions of Peleliu, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Wisconsin majoring in Zoology. He was employed by the State of Wisconsin Conservation Dept. for three summers working at the Woodruff State Fish Hatchery. Later, he served as a Conservation Warden in Vernon, WI and then in Green Lake County for 31 years. He was a Conservation Warden Supervisor in Wautoma from 1964 until his retirement in 1981. He worked as a Patrolman for the City of Wautoma for a number of years following his retirement.
Bill and his wife enjoyed camping, gardening, fishing, and traveling to all the states, and many foreign countries. Throughout his career as a Conservation Warden, Bill was very involved with youth gun and boating safety.
He was a faithful member of Hope Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council. Bill belonged to Wild Rose VFW Post 9502, Wolman/Minskey American Legion Post 317, Wautoma, Waushara Chapter Ducks Unlimited, and AARP. He was past Director of Waushara Electric Cooperative and a member of Wisconsin Wardens Association.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Baier; one daughter, Jane Bubolz, Gillett. three stepchildren, Linda (Armen) Wedell, Karen (Wayne) Herzog, and Don Keske (fiancée Debbie); eight grandchildren, Andy Smith, Hannah Bubolz, James Baier, Randi Kent, Rhonda (Dustin) Decker, Amber Wedell, Cory Wedell, and Emily (Scott) Schaut; four great grandchildren; one brother, Herbert Baier, Santee, CA; one sister, Alice (Edward) Pringle, Santa Rosa, CA; other relatives and many dear friends.
In addition to his first wife and son, he was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George, Arthur, Walter, Robert, and John; and by two sisters, Norma and Myrtle.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Hope Lutheran Church in Wautoma with Rev. Nathan A. Gauerke officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Wautoma Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday at the Church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of services.
