Vytautas Stanley "Bud" Guokas, age 90, of Plainfield, passed away early Thursday morning, April 4, 2013 at his residence. He was born November 21, 1922 in Plainfield, WI to the late Stanley and Barbara (Gedrick) Guokas. He grew up on the family farm and attended local schools, graduating from Plainfield High School (now Tri County) with the class of 1940. Bud entered the U.S. Navy service on November 27, 1943 in Milwaukee, WI and was discharged February 1, 1946 at Great Lakes, IL. While in the service, he graduated from technical schools before serving on U.S. Navy ships including the Bunker Hill.
He then attended DeForest Electronic Institute in Chicago, and was then employed by the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement in February of 1979. He was married on Nov. 25, 1950 to Rose Mary Bodoh at St. John's Catholic Church in Marshfield, WI. The couple later moved to Michigan, Madison and Milwaukee where he served at General Mitchell Field until he retired and moved to Plainfield in 1979. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, serving as proclaimer and usher for many years. He taught the AARP "55 Alive" course in the area, a member of Toastmasters, judge for "Quiz Bowl" and was a member of the Charismatic Group of Stevens Point. He enjoyed gardening, tending fruit trees, hunting, fishing, woodworking and grandchildren. He is survived by five children: Stanley (Monica), Theresa, Gerald (Bonnie), Charles (Linda) and Mary; eight grandchildren: Brian (Shani), Mary (James), Rebecca, Jeffrey, Stephen, Elizabeth, Gregory, and Erin Guokas; one step grandson: Graham (Deanna) Katzer; three step great grandchildren: Chelsea, Makayla and Austin Katzer; and one sister: Eleanor Conlon. He was preceded in death by his wife: Rose Mary; and by two sisters: Betty Jacunski and Beruta Norwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 8, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Plainfield with Rev. Paul Lippert officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Calvary Cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 until 5:00 p.m. at Leikness & Stall Funeral Home in Plainfield and on Monday at the Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services. The Rosary will be recited on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. A Memorial is being established.
