Vernon Humphrey

Vernon M. Humphrey, age 94, of Coloma, passed away Tuesday morning, August 9, 2011, at Wild Rose Community Memorial Hospital. He was born July 13, 1917 in the Town of Hancock, the son of Vernon F. and Cora (Van Buskirk) Humphrey. He married Verna E. Groskreutz on October 22, 1947 in Wautoma. Vernon was a 1935 graduate of Hancock High School. He served his country with the 490th squadron of the Army Air Corp. during World War II. Vernon was employed by the Waushara County Highway Department for many years until his retirement as Highway Commissioner in 1980. He served as Wautoma Fire Chief for many years and he belonged to Wolman- Minskey American Legion Post 317, Wautoma. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Town of Deerfield. Survivors include his wife, Verna E. Humphrey, a resident of Rosemore Village, Wild Rose; one daughter, Phoebe (Thomas) Freese, Wautoma; two grandchildren, Natalie (Marc) McCann, Seattle, WA., Shawn (Anna) Wilcox, Rochester, MN.; two step grandchildren, Karin Freese, North Fond du Lac, Becky Freese, Wautoma; five great grandchildren, Madison, Aidan, Trevor, Ty, and Lexi; one sister, Florence Rooney, Geneva, IL.; one brother-in-law, Elmer Groskreutz, Berlin; one sister-in-law, Erma Schram, Clintonville. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Athel Dredske, Ivy Clark, and Evelyn Ueeck; three brothers, Royce, Robert and Gerald Humphrey.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in the Town of Deerfield with Rev. Dale W. Bahls officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
