Vernet H. "Vern" Slife, age 80, formerly of Richford, passed away at his home on August 3 with family by his side after a strong, but brief battle of cancer and Leukemia. Vern was born January 13, 1934 in the town of Richford to Walter and Esther (Schwersenska) Slife. He married his childhood sweetheart, Gloria Binder on June 4, 1955 in El Paso, TX. Vern served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956. His first employment was setting pins at the T & O in Oshkosh. He was assistant manager of Shoreview Lanes for several years, then became an electrician (IBEW Local 577) and worked for several contractors in the Oshkosh area, and later in life owned and operated Slife's Y-Go-By Bar and Store in Richford. After retiring Vern enjoyed spending time with his family, especially at Lake Sharon, visiting the casino, maintaining his lawn, watching wildlife, and riding his beloved Kubota. He loved to bowl, shoot pool, play baseball, fish, hunt, and make crafts. Vern was actively involved in the building of the Richford Community Center, one of the founders of the Richford Game Club, active member of the Richford Ridge Riders Snowmobile Club and past president of all three organizations. He was a member of the Richford-Dakota American Legion Post 139. Vern is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria J. Slife, Pine River; Daughters, Debb (Paul) Semrow, Wautoma; Becky (John) Soper, Saxeville; Son, Mark (Charissa) Slife, Richford; Six grand-children, Shane & Tyler Semrow, Hailey & Olivia Soper, Megan &Collin Slife; Two great grand- daughters, Alexis Semrow, Kenna Semrow; Sisters, Lorinda Heft, Dee Knox, Barbara (Bruce) Singstock; Brother, Curt (Sherry) Slife; Brother-in law, Edward Eberhart. Vern is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Jean in infancy, his parents, one brother, Darwin Slife, two sisters, Elenora Kimball & Arvilla Eberhart; brothers-in-law, Harry Knox and Jesse Heft. Former member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Richford and current member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Saxeville. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, W4570 County Road A, Saxeville with Pastor Vicki Fink officiating. Burial will be at Lake View Memorial Park, Oshkosh. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the Church from 12 noon until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, a memorial is being established.
