Shirley Mae Speilman, age 81 of Wautoma, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Theda Clark Medical Center, Neenah. She was born in Rockford, IL on August 20, 1936 to Walter and Helen (West) Speilman. After graduating from Wautoma High School with the Class of 1954, Shirley went to U.W. Oshkosh to become a teacher. After 1 year of college, Shirley joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged after 4 years of service. She then went back to U.W. Oshkosh and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching. She then moved to Indiana and attended Purdue University to complete her Master’s in Education. Shirley taught in Indiana at Edison Junior High, Gary West High School and Portage High School. Over the years of teaching, Shirley received numerous teaching awards and touched the lives of many students she taught. Shirley enjoyed traveling with her mother, was a past member of the Waushara County Historical Society and a very active member at Grace United Methodist Church. Shirley loved her life, her years teaching and lived a very happy life. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Shirley is survived by her siblings: Norma Koechel, Linda (Robert) Fritz, Bonnie Wallschleger, Charles Speilman, Donna (Richard) Kalata, Karen Thompson, Paula Speilman, John (LuAnn) Speilman; sister-in-law: Melissa Speilman; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister: Audrey (Milton) Trowbridge, brother: Bruce Speilman; brothers-in-law: Tom Wallschleger, Arley Koechel and sister-in-law: Rita Speilman.
Funeral services will be held at 11Am on Thursday, January 25, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church, Wautoma. Burial and military honors will follow at Wautoma Union Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at church on Thursday from 9:30AM until the time of services at 11AM.
