Robert (Bob) Volkman, 94, of Wautoma died June 27, 2010 at Rosemore Retirement Village in Wild Rose.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on October 22, 1915 to Frank and Mabel (TeBrake) Volkmann. He grew up in Oshkosh, attended Oshkosh High School and graduated from the School of Business at the University of Wisconsin - Madison in 1939. Bob followed his father into the insurance business; his first job was working for the Fire Insurance Rating Bureau in Nashville, Tennessee.
He returned to Wisconsin and married his childhood sweetheart, Jean McVicar, in 1942. Bob served his country in the United States Army during World War II with the 11th Armored Infantry in Germany and Austria from 1944 to 1946.
After completing his military service, Bob and his family settled in Wauwatosa where he lived for eighteen years before moving to Brookfield. He worked for the Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Company and then the Miller's National Insurance Company as a state agent. He earned the designation of CPCU (Certified Property and Casualty Underwriter) in 1963. He worked in the insurance industry for 40 years before retiring in 1980.
During and following his career, Bob and his wife were active in the Blue Goose, a social organization for field agents and their spouses, which afforded them many opportunities to travel throughout the United States and Canada. In retirement Bob volunteered thousands of hours over a fifteen year period at Zablocki Veteran's Hospital in West Allis.
Throughout his life Bob spent summers at the family cottage on Big Hills Lake near Wild Rose. After retirement he and his wife traveled to New Braunfels, Texas each winter where they enjoyed the company of many friends. They bought a home in Wautoma in 1996 where Bob lived for thirteen years before moving to Rosemore Retirement Village in Wild Rose in November of 2009.
Golf, gardening and playing bridge were his favorite activities. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. He spent many happy hours with family and friends on the golf course of the Waushara Country Club.
Robert Volkman is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jean, Wautoma and two children, Nancy (Tom) Erickson of Wild Rose and John Volkman, Seattle, WA; daughter-in-law, Lynn Volkman, Menomonee Falls; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Randall Zogbaum) Erickson, Sauk City and David (Jen) Volkman, Oceanside, CA and one great- grandson, Jackson Zogbaum. He is further survived by two nephews, Ronald Volkman, Oshkosh, and Richard Volkman, Palmer, AK.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his older son, Robert Volkman Jr. and his brother, Donald Volkman.
Bob had a long, full and good life that he shared generously with his family and many friends.
