Michael "Mike" F. Martin, age 76 of Wautoma, originally from Gurnee, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 after battling with lung and prostate cancer for 17 years and being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer one year ago. He was born on December 3, 1936 in Waukegan, IL to Norbert and Rosemary (Tyrell) Martin. He graduated from Warren Township High School in Gurnee, IL in 1954. He married Suzanne (Madsen) Scheuber on August 10, 1963 in Waukegan, IL. He was employed by the County of Lake, Waukegan, IL as Deputy Supervisor for the Supervisors of Assessments Office for 40 years before retiring in 1996. He remained a Lake Co. resident until 1998 when he and Suzie moved to Wautoma, where they had owned a summer home for 20 years, and purchased a home on Lake Irogomi where they lived for 12 years. The couple then moved to the condos at Two Oaks North in 2010. Horses were the love of his life; one of his horses made two T.V. commercials for Kraft Cheese which was also featured in most magazines for Kraft. He was a life time member and past president of the Lake County Mounted Posse. He also had an antique surrey which he drove in parades and weddings, taking the bride and groom to and from church. He loved auctions, antique shops and garage sales, always looking for a treasure, which over the years he found many. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Wautoma. Mike and his wife wintered in Yuma, AZ for 17 years and were members of Gloria de Cristo Lutheran Church in Foot Hills, AZ during the winter.
Mike is survived by his wife of 49 years: Suzanne; three children: Robert (Diane) Scheuber, Elizabeth, CO, Steven (Karen) Martin, Avella, PA, Sheryl (Mark) Smith, Pittsburgh, PA; nine grandchildren: Michael Scheuber, Avella, PA, Christine Scheuber, Ft. Collins, CO, Tara Martin, Athens, GA, David, Meghan and Matthew Smith, Pittsburgh, PA; Mandy (Adam) Gaily, Pittsburgh, PA, Melanie, Los Angles, CA, Joey, Avella, PA; two great grandchildren: Abby and Alivia Gailey, Pittsburgh, PA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many of the greatest friends ever. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother: Timothy Martin.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 at 12PM (NOON) at Hope Lutheran Church. Officiating at the service will Pastor Nathan Gauerke. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10AM until the time of service at 12PM at church on Monday June 3, 2013. Leikness Funeral Home, Wautoma is assisting the family with arrangements.
