Marjorie Staples

Marjorie J. (Johnson) Staples, 93, formerly of Plainfield, WI, passed away on July 5, 2013 at Sylvan Crossings in Stevens Point, WI. She was a lifelong resident of Central Wisconsin and a retired teacher. In addition to her love of children, she loved nature. She walked portions of the Tri-County School Forest and the Waushara Ice Age Trails. She sold her farmland to the DNR for the "Staples Prairie Chicken Stomping Grounds." She enjoyed the seasons, but come March, she was ready to go search for Spring. She stayed active by reading, traveling, gardening, and walking: "If the walls are closing in, I get out and take a walk." The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013 at the United Methodist Church, Plainfield with the Rev David Leistra officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Leikness and Stahl Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. Friday until the time of services at the church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Leikness & Stahl Funeral Home, Plainfield. Marjorie was born in Town of Leola in Adams County on July 16, 1919 in the home of her parents Vance L. and Vera C. (Wing) Johnson. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1938 and continued on to receive a Teacher's diploma from the State Teachers College at Stevens Point, WI in 1940. In 1963, Marjorie attained her Bachelors of Science Degree in Education from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. She loved teaching and working with youngsters. Marjorie was married to Vance I. Staples on December 25, 1943; they were married 61 years with his death occurring on April 5, 2005. Marjorie worked as a teacher in a one room schoolhouse near Dellwood, WI at the beginning of her teaching career. She also taught in Nekoosa, Wausau, Hancock, and Plainfield, WI. Marjorie taught the majority of her career her home town of Plainfield. Marjorie was also active in farming activities as well has housekeeping and gardening. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, and baking. She was also actively involved in Eastern Star, Methodist Women's Group, Retired Teacher's Association, Monday Morning Ladies Breakfast Club, and Heart to Heart. She also continued to volunteer at school whenever her help was needed. Marjorie is survived by three children;Glenn (Peggy) Staples, Larsen, Cynthia (Joe) Omernik, Stevens Point, and Ellynn (Tom) Jagielo, Wisconsin Rapids, Six grandsons, Jeff (Ruth) Staples, Tremonton, Utah, Mike Staples, Oshkosh, Scott Staples, Madison, Paul Omernik, Fargo, North Dakota, Steve Jagielo, Fort Collins, Colorado, and Aaron Jagielo, Madison, two beautiful great-granddaughters, Maggie and Olivia Staples, Tremonton, Utah, a brother, Charles (Dorothy) Johnson, Minocqua, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends. Marjorie is preceded in death by Vance Staples, husband, Clifton (Bud) Johnson, brother, Gladys (Conover) Johnson, sister-in-law, and Eloise (Staples) Bacon, sister-in-law. A sincere thank you to the staff at Sylvan Crossings for their special assistance. We always felt that Mom was in good hands with their caring ways. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in the names of Vance and Marjorie (Johnson) Staples for a continuing graduate of Tri-County Area High School. She will be fondly remembered and lovingly missed by family and friends.
