John K. "Jack" Mares, age 87, of Wautoma, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, May 29, 2012. He was born on October 30, 1924 in Bear Creek, the son of George and Hildegard (Schindel) Mares. He married Jean Lachelt on June 27, 1953 in Wautoma.
He joined the Army in March 1943 and served as a Tank Commander in General Patton's 3rd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. He enjoyed talking to high school history classes about his experiences during World War II.
Jack worked tirelessly for the betterment of Wautoma while serving on various committees, commissions, boards and clubs. He served on the City of Wautoma's Parks and Recreation commission for over 25 years. Jack was instrumental in creating Bird Creek Park and forming the youth baseball program over 30 years ago.
He owned City Rec Lanes in Wautoma for over 30 years.
Jack is survived by one daughter and one son in law, Deborah and Jeffrey Buchholz, Wautoma; two grandchildren, Valerie Buchholz (Glenn Sperber), New York, New York, and Eric Buchholz (Elizabeth Lauer), Wautoma. Jack was preceded in death by his wife Jean, an infant grandson J.R., his parents, his brother Harold, and sister Adrienne.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 11:00am in St. Joseph Catholic Church followed by a Full Military Honors Tribute. A time of visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:00am until the time of services at the Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Herma Heart Center, Children's Hospital Foundation, PO Box 1997-MS3050, Milwaukee, WI 53201.
