Jean Volkman passed away on December 30, 2012 at Rosemore Retirement Village in Wild Rose. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She touched all who knew her with her grace, love and generosity.
Jean was born in Oshkosh on June 12, 1916 to David and Lillian (Jameson) McVicar. She grew up in Oshkosh and graduated with highest honors from Oshkosh State Teacher's College (now the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh) in 1938 with dual majors in mathematics and chemistry. Jean taught high school mathematics in Galesville, WI for three years and in Lake Mills, WI for one year. In 1942 she married Robert (Bob) Volkman; they shared 68 years together.
When Bob completed his military service after World War II, the couple settled in Wauwatosa where they raised a family for eighteen years. In 1966 the family moved to a larger home in Brookfield, so Jean could care for her parents who came to live with them. They moved to Wautoma in 1996 where Jean lived for sixteen years before moving to Rosemore in November, 2012.
After Bob retired, Jean and Bob spent each winter for twenty-five years in New Braunfels TX. Every year they looked forward to reuniting with the great friends they made there. Throughout her life Jean, her family and friends enjoyed summers at their cottage on Big Hills Lake. The cottage was built by Jean's father in 1930 and is now being used by the sixth generation of her family.
Jean was an active member of the Waushara Country Club where she and Bob played golf, had great times and made many friends. Jean was also an avid and skilled bridge player who enjoyed playing with her card club on a regular basis. She loved flowers and gardens, music and the performing arts. Jean cared deeply about others and about the planet. Throughout her 96 years she appreciated and enjoyed life, stayed informed, contributed generously and tried to make a difference in the world.
Jean Volkman is survived by two children, Nancy (Tom) Erickson of Wild Rose and John Volkman of Seattle WA; daughter-in-law, Lynn Volkman, Memononee Falls; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Randall Zogbaum) Erickson, Sauk City and David (Jen) Volkman, Carlsbad CA; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson Zogbaum and Natalie Volkman.
