On Sunday, January 2, 2011, Harold A. Wilson 90 of Bancroft picked up the reigns to his favorite team and drove his buggy off to be with his beloved wife in Heaven.
Grandpa was born on May 31, 1920 in Plainfield, WI to the late Arden and Lena (Detlor) Wilson.
Grandpa was married to my Grandmother, Genevieve (Jenny) Potter on October 12, 1940 in Dubuque IA. The couple settled in the Plainfield area and later moved to Bancroft where they raised their three sons Jimmie, John, and David. My Grandfather performed many jobs, like others at that time, to support his family. He drove milk truck, plowed snow, helped clear the river bottom at Petenwell, operated a junk yard, and milked dairy cows. The one thing that was always constant, besides the undying love for his wife, was his love of horses. In his 90 years, not one day passed that he did not have a herd of his own. My grandparents named their farm Belly Acres Pony Farm whe're you could find as many as 85 ponies at a time. My cousin Renata and I spent many a day at that farm developing our own love of horses under grandpa's watchful eye. Everyday there was a lesson to learn and he was always there, quietly teaching us.
After retiring, Grandpa enjoyed going to auctions. He never went home empty handed. He was known for buying a box of treasurers for a buck and selling them off piece by piece for a profit before getting them to the truck. Grandpa always had a story to tell and a joke ready. In his later years, Grandpa took up the hobby of woodworking. He created numerous items from picture frames to a life size stage coach. Whenever you complimented him on his handy work he would readily point out all the flaws in the item to draw attention away from himself. That is how grandpa was; he did not want to be the center of attention, but an observer on the sidelines.
My Grandfather was blessed with only four grandchildren. We were fortunate enough to be the center of his life. Grandpa always included us in whatever he was doing from driving cows across the road to the barn to be milked, to trimming horse's hooves, or harnessing a team to the buggy. As the great-grandchildren started to arrive, Grandpa took the same tender care with them to teach them about horses, people, and life.
Grandpa Harold was preceded in death by his parents Arden and Lena, Jenny, his wife of 63 years; three step-brothers Wayborn, Wayne, and Carol; and his beloved son Jimmie whom he lost more than 55 years ago. He is survived by two sons Raymond John (Judy) of Lady Lake, FL and David (Jeanette) of Bancroft. Four grandchildren John (Missy) Wilson of Holmen, Renata Wilson of Amherst, Renee (Scott) Hunkins of Almond, and Troy (Sarah Pabst) Wilson of Hager City. Nine great-grandchildren Josh and Courtney of Stoughton, Turner and Raychel of Holmen, Austin and Kaitlin of Plainfield, Braden and Jennifer Hunkins of Almond and Corbin Kelnhofer of Stevens Point. Numerous nieces, nephews, loving friends, and his final herd of fifteen horses, ponies, and mules.
Funeral services will be held with visitation on Wednesday, January 5th from 11am to l pm at the Leikness & Stahl Funeral Home, Plainfield immediately followed by the service at l pm with Pastor Jeff Silha officiating. Burial will be held in the Plainfield Cemetery.
