George C. "Fritz" Zettelmeier Jr., age 81, longtime Plainfield businessman, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday afternoon, Dec. 2, 2011 with his family and friends at his side. He was born Jan. 18, 1930 in Bancroft, the son of George C. and Olga (Gottschalk) Zettelmeier Sr. George was a graduate of Bancroft High School where he was valedictorian of the class of 1948. He worked at Haviland Farms in Bancroft and was then employed at the paper mill in Port Edwards. Later, George owned the Standard Service Station in Wautoma and then operated a milk route in the Plainfield area. In 1958, he and the late Jesse Ruffalo founded Plainfield Trucking, Inc. Fritz loved agriculture and he enjoyed farming in the Plainfield and Hancock area for many years, quitting farming in 2009. He will be fondly remembered for his enjoyment of snow- mobiling, playing cards and doing yard work. He served as trustee and past president of the Village of Plainfield. George was a member of the Up River Gun Club, Ducks Unlimited and the Wisconsin Potato and Vegetable Growers Association. He is survived by three loving children, Deborah (Larry) Monroe, Hancock, Randy W. Zettelmeier (Kimmie Kubitschek), Plainfield, and Darlene (Randal) Thurley, Plainfield; seven grandchildren, Christine (Curt) Rohr, Oshkosh, Cole Monroe, Wausau, Thomas (Andrea) Sagami, Plainfield, Collin Thurley (Jessica Beggs) Plainfield, Ashley Thurley, Plainfield, Shane Thurley, Wisconsin Rapids, and Tomio Sagami (Janessa Passineau) Plainfield; five great grandchildren, Mason, Max, Jaxson, Edward, and Conner; two sisters, Joyce Talajowski, West Bend, Marilyn (Ronald) Porst, Cudahy; his special canine companion, "Cokie". He is further survived by other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his dear friend and companion, Judith A. Iris on August 11, 2000, his parents, and by two sisters, Charlotte and Darlene
Zettelmeier. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Plainfield. Burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Town of Pine Grove, Portage County. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Leikness & Stahl Funeral Home in Plainfield and at St. Paul's Church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. A Prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Memorial is being established.
