Genevieve Greenman

Genevieve May Greenman, age 93 of Wautoma, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at Heartland House, Wautoma.
Genevieve May Greenman was born in Pine River, Wisconsin on May 6, 1920. Her parents were Delbert Avery Greenman and Lila May Caswell Greenman. When she was three years old her parents moved to a farm 3 ½ miles away, which became her lifelong home. On a large hill known as Bluebird Hill, there were woodlands with deep kettle formations, a lake, trout stream and wetlands to enjoy. She walked a mile each day one way to attend a small one room school, District No. 6. She continued her education at Wautoma High School and graduated in 1938. She then attended Waushara Normal School; a teacher's training junior college, graduating in 1940. She taught in three different one-room schools: Silver Lake, Burr Oak Valley and Willow View, for eight years. She was responsible for grades 1 through 8. For a few years she taught grades 1 through 4 in the Pine River State Graded School. She especially enjoyed teaching first grade. The opportunity arose in 1950 to teach that grade in the same building where she attended high school. She received a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Stevens Point in 1958. She continued her education throughout her teaching career with advanced courses, summer school and many workshops. When overcrowding forced the district to build a new school, she taught a class for one year in the public library with patrons wandering in and out. She welcomed the completion of the new Riverview School in 1960. Her modern room overlooked the White River with Mallard Ducks strolling about and even nesting amount the trees and shrubs of the attractive grounds. Growing up in a rural environment, she enjoyed participation in the 4-H programs where she won many awards for her work. The love of gardening and plants continued and her room overflowed with beautiful flowers. Pupils enjoyed the large fish she displayed in her aquarium. She was an outstanding first grade teacher and was honored by the State Department for 45 years of service. After retirement a large sunroom had to be added to the already extensively remodeled home to accommodate her plants and fish. She was very active in church and besides teaching Sunday School; she was a Sunday School Superintendent for over 25 years. She sang in the choir and did much volunteer work.
Genevieve will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. She is survived by many dear friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Lila and Delbert Greenman; her sister: Irma Greenman; and brother Delbert Greenman.
Funeral Services for Genevieve May Greenman will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Crossroads Family Church, 640 S. Water Street, Wautoma with Pastor Dan Carlson officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Pine River Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the Church.
Should friends desire, memorials in Genevieve's memory will be directed to a children's orphanage in Uganda, Africa.
