Frances L. Hughes, age 92, of Wautoma, passed away Saturday morning, December 17, 2011 at Heartland House in Wautoma. She was born May 15, 1919 at Kingston, WI, the daughter of John and Etta (Bemis) Crossman. She married William Hughes on April 18, 1941 in Winnebago County. He preceded her in death in 1970. She and her late husband farmed the family homestead in the Town of Nekimi, Winnebago County for many years. Later, she was employed at SNC Manufacturing of Oshkosh until her retirement. Frances loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed being with them more than anything else. She always left them laughing.
For many years after moving to Wautoma she enjoyed her Bible Study group. They met at her home every week and she developed many dear friendships through the years. Frances was a regular blood donor and a proud American. She cared about the less fortunate, especially children. She was also an advocate for the sanctity of human life. She loved animals and regularly contributed to the Humane Society. Frances also enjoyed reading, word puzzles and dancing. She attended Waushara Community Church and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church both of Wautoma. Frances enjoyed living and Heartland House in her later years. The staff became an extended family to her. Her family would like to extend their thanks for the way she was loved and cared for every day. She is survived by five children, John (Bonnie) Hughes, Van Dyne, Victoria (James) Hauman, Oshkosh, Kathy (Steve) Pennau, Wautoma, Susan (Don) Pennau, Pilot Point, TX, and Julie (Frank) Williams, Wautoma; one stepson, Larry (Sharon) Hughes, Fond du Lac; 12 grandchildren, Jody (Rich) Lamb, Jon (Rachel) Hughes, Lisa (Jim) Schoen, Angela Chacon (Fred Farmer), Patricia (Mark) Smidt, Wade (Tammy) Pennau, Jason (Linda) Pennau, Travis (Cindy) Pennau, Jill (John) Briggs, Jami (Adam) Adamovich, Frank (Emily) Williams, Timothy Williams (Brooke Klein); 28 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a special niece, RoseAnn Morris. She is further survived by other nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and by three brothers, Clarence, John, and Conrad. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m at Waushara Community Church with Rev. R. Alan Spitler officiating. Burial will be at Bethesda Cemetery, Town of Nekimi, Winnebago County. Visitation will be held on Tuesday at the Church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services. A Memorial is being established.
