Esther Gear

June 25, 1923 — October 5, 2011

Esther Johanna (Wrasse) Gear - born June 25, 1923 - died October 5, 2011 at her daughter's home in Plover, Wis. Aged 88, Esther was very much at peace in this final stage of her life.

Esther's husband, Bernard Gear, sons Ray and Carl Gear, and parents Bertha and Otto Wrasse precede her in death, along with sister Lillian Putskey (and her husband Harley) and brother Carl Wrasse, as well as beloved friends Bea and Herman Norwood and Emma Sommer.

Survivors include brother George Wrasse, sons Lyle (Amanda) and Bob Gear, daughter-in-law Deb Gear, daughters DeEtt (Dennis) Mann, Bernadette (Bill) Froehlich, Nancy Gear, and Judy (Terry) Taft, and special niece Joyce ("Marvelous Marv") Vriezen. Esther had 11 grandchildren, nieces and nephews aplenty, and a growing number of great-grandchildren and friends - none of whom are currently in jail!

Esther was educated at Marshfield in nursing and continued her education at Marquette University. Esther entered the Army Nurse Corps April 5th, 1945 and served in Hawaii, Okinawa and Korea until Sept. 22, 1946, leaving with a rank of 1st Lieutenant. Esther was very modest about her career as an army nurse, but she she cared well for many and often while being very ill herself.

Esther and Bernard owned and operated the Hancock Nursing Home for many years. As well as private duty nursing, she also worked in the veterans nursing homes in Tomah and Milwaukee and nursing homes in Wood, Portage and Waushara County.

In addition to raising a big family she was a talented and dedicated quilter and mender of all things--clothes, socks, backaches, headaches...

Esther gardened her entire life, and gave flowers to everyone, including happy little bouquets for the local restaurant tables. She was an avid reader and eager to learn more and she took pride in keeping an open mind.

Esther was a nurse, a gardener, caring and loving. She had a quick wit and always enjoyed a good joke, especially the corny ones. She had a great sense of humor, thankfully, because she called upon it often in dealing with her band of misfits. They will love her and miss her forever.

A memorial service will be held at Leikness & Stahl Funeral Home in Plainfield, WI on Monday, October 10, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 11:00 to 12:30 p.m. prior to the service.

A special thanks to caregiver Stephanie Greco-Disher, Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice, SWSC Lori Mieska, RNSC Patty Wotruba and to Community Care of Central Wisconsin.
