Barbara Vroman

March 31, 1933 — May 7, 2012

Barbara Ellen (Fitz) Vroman, age 79, of Hancock, WI passed away the morning of Monday, May 7th 2012 at home with her husband, Dale and son Marc and his wife Doreen Vroman, at her side.



She was born March 31, 1933 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Wm. Fitz and Pearl (Coombs) Fitz. She married Dale Vroman on June 31, 1951 in Plainfield, WI, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2011. Dale resides in Hancock, WI.



Barbara was employed as a correspondent, personal columnist and editor for many years at The Waushara Argus in Wautoma, WI. She was a well known novelist, essayist, journalist, teacher, public speaker and poet. She touched the lives of many writers in her classes at The Clearing, and the UW-Rhinelander School of Arts.



Barbara won numerous writing and journalist awards. Her first book, "Tomorrow is a River",

(co-authorized with Peggy Hanson-Dopp), won best book length fiction of a Wisconsin Author, the Leslie Cross award. Other books followed; "Sons of Thunder", "Linger Not at Chebar" and "Small Celebrations". She was working on many other projects, including "Jeff's Story", "Firefly" a sequel to "Tomorrow is a River", and "Aunt Lutie". Barbara created Pearl-Win, her own publishing company and published numerous books for other authors.



She is was a devoted wife and mother, survived by one daughter, Kim S. (Vroman) Pence and her husband Robert of Plano, TX; two sons, Marc R. Vroman and wife Doreen of Green Bay, WI., and Ryan D. Vroman and wife Faye of Cottage Grove, MN. She adored her four grandchildren, Travis Vroman of Madison, WI, Isaac Vroman of Green Bay, WI, Nicole Vroman and Brooke Vroman of Cottage Grove, MN, and three-step grandchildren, Sam, Natalie and Nicole Pence, Plano, TX.



She is further survived by one brother, Wm. Fitz and his wife Anne of Payson, AZ. Sister-in-Laws Sharon (Vroman) LaFontaine and husband Tom of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, and Connie (Vroman) Biesik of Killeen, TX, as well other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Guy A. Vroman.
