Alice Daye

April 16, 1918 — April 6, 2011

Alice C. Daye

Alice Clara Mae (Mischka) Daye entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. She was born in the town of Deerfield, Waushara County on April 16, 1918, the daughter of Richard and Alvina (Wedde) Mischka. As a lifelong resident and educator in Wautoma, she will be sadly missed by many. Alice will especially be remembered for her spunk and fashionable style. If something needed to be said, she would say it! Even through her recent illness, she was full of "spit and vinegar" for her family, friends and caretakers.

Alice graduated from Waushara County Normal School, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and started teaching school in 1940. She later earned a Masters of Education in Reading from UWSP as well. As a teacher and eventually, the "Right to Read" teacher at Dafoe School, she made a significant impact on education. Alice chose the teaching profession because she loved children. Her philosophy was, "There are no bad children. They ALL need guidance from someone who cares. Be firm, but kind." She retired from teaching with 31 years of experience and continued to substitute teach for years to follow. Alice loved teaching so much that she would be seen skipping down the hallway on her way to a classroom!

October 18, 1941, Alice married Reuben C. Daye at what is now Peace Lutheran Church, Wautoma, where she was also baptized and confirmed. Reuben preceded Alice in death on January 5, 1997. Throughout their years of marriage, they were blessed with two children. She is survived by her two children, Nadine (Gerry) Warsek, Wautoma and Curtis (Dorothy) Daye, Oshkosh; two grandchildren, Raquel (special friend Steve Seul) Bohn, Wautoma and Danny Daye, Wautoma; two great-children Dalton and Tucker Bohn. Alice affectionately referred to Dalton and Tucker as her "precious little boys". Additionally she is survived by two sisters, Jennie (Stanley) Nigbor and Louise (Gilbert) Reetz; special friends Anita Mischka, Barnie Wood and Joyce DeLaura. Further survived by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers Clarence, Elmer, Herman, Art, Walter; and seven sisters, Lena, Martha, Mabel, Leona, Viola, Minnie and Tillie.

Alice and her family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the residents and staff at Heartland House, Wautoma, along with the staff from Agnesian Hospice. The residents' kind words and support for Alice and her family is immeasurable. The staff from Heartland House and Agnesian Hospice touched our hearts in countless ways. Educators are told that it takes a special person to teach. Coming from an educator, Alice, it takes special people to help those with failing health. Thank you and God Bless!

Funeral services will take place Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Peace Lutheran Church, Wautoma. Visitation will be 1:00 - 3:00 PM with a traditional funeral service at 3:00 PM. Internment will take place immediately following the service at Wautoma Union Cemetery where Alice will be laid to rest with her husband. A luncheon will be served for family and friends at Peace Lutheran Church after internment.
